Dennis Smith Surveys

For more than 50 years, Dennis Smith Surveys has been providing land survey services in the Illawarra area and beyond.Founded by Dennis Smith in the late 1960’s, his son Murray Smith has now taken the helm with a team of experienced surveyors. We have 3 fully equipped vehicles with the latest Leica Total Stations and GPS equipment.

Over so many years, we have attained local knowledge not just of Wollongong, but also:

  • Shellharbour
  • Kiama
  • Sutherland Shire
  • Southern Highlands

We assist our clients with large projects such as multi-dwelling construction with multi-lot subdivision, right down to simple boundary marking to confirm fencing locations. Major projects we have worked on include:

  • Kembla Grange Racecourse – surveys over numerous years to assist in track and drainage upgrades
  • Port Kembla Port Corporation – preparation of multiple easement and lease surveys covering both inner and outer harbour
  • Berkeley – 85 lot subdivision for Land & Housing Corporation (Dept of Housing)

History

Dennis Smith Surveys is very much part of the Northern Illawarra community, with involvement over the years with Kembla Joggers Running Club, Bulli Soccer Club, Stanwell Park Arts Theatre and hosting of school work experience students once-twice yearly from the local High Schools including Bulli High School, Edmond Rice College and Holy Spirit High School.

Murray began working in the business aged 16, beginning his studies at Wollongong TAFE, then progressing to University of Newcastle to complete a Bachelor of Surveying (Hons), becoming a Registered Surveyor in 2007. Murray is a member of Institute of Surveyors NSW, Board of Surveyors (NSW), and Association of Consulting Surveyors (NSW). A proud resident of The ‘Gong, Murray can often be spotted on weekends jogging along our beautiful coast line, or enjoying riding his mountain bike in the foothills of the escarpment. A keen athlete, Murray has raced both running and triathlon over may years locally, Australia-wide and overseas.

Sadly, in 2022 the team at Dennis Smith surveys lost their founder Dennis Smith, aged 82 years. The practice which Dennis founded is now operated by Murray. Dennis’ daughter Emma & nephew Mitchell work there as well, making it still very much a family-run business.
